Scholarship Description
The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship is targeted to high-achieving international students who wish to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in the US and who are dedicated to positive civic and social change.
It brings together the best of AU - academic excellence, leadership development, and global engagement - the AU Emerging Global Leader achieves, inspires, and serves with vision.
The American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship (AU EGLS) promotes educational access and opportunity while enhancing international diversity. It is intended for students who will be to returning home to improve under-resourced, underserved communities in his/her home country.
Eligibility
Who is qualified to apply?
To be considered for the scholarship, candidates must be secondary school students (not university students) applying as first-year (freshman) students for the fall (August) 2017 semester. AU EGLS candidates must apply Regular Decision for fall (August) 2017.

Number of Awards
One (1) scholarship will be awarded to a first-year (freshman) international student.
Note: If you are not selected as the 2017 AU EGL recipient and wish to continue the application process, you may be eligible for partial merit scholarships.
Sponsorship duration
For the whole duration of the study program.
Note: Scholarship is renewable for a total of four years of undergraduate study, based on continued satisfactory academic performance.
Scholarship benefits
The AU EGL scholarship covers all billable AU expenses (full tuition, room and board) for an international student who will need a visa (preferably an F-1 or J-1 student visa) to study in the United States.
Note: The scholarship does not cover non-billable expenses such as mandatory health insurance, books, airline tickets and miscellaneous expenses (approximately U.S.$4,000 per year).
Method of Application
This scholarship is highly competitive. Only apply if you meet the criteria listed above. To apply to the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship, complete the online AU EGLS application on the official website (see link below). You also need to complete and submit the Common Application or Coalition Application, together with all supporting documents per checklist by the priority deadline, or by January deadline at the latest (see deadline dates below). Please note that students who do not complete their application by the deadline will not be reviewed.

- A demonstrated commitment to leadership, volunteerism, community service and to advancing the needs of people in their home country.
- A minimum 95 TOEFL iBT, 7.0 IELTS or 600 paper-based TOEFL
- You are a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or dual citizen of the U.S. and another country.
- You are enrolled in or have already begun any post-secondary studies at another university in your home country or the United States.
