HOW TO SHARE A Wi-Fi CONNECTION FROM A MAC TO AN I PHONE

Sometimes when the WiFi network just can't give you the connection you need you might find sharing your connection via your Mac is the solution. Here's how to do it.

There are times when the WiFi network just can't give you the connection you need. Perhaps you are at work and the WiFi just can't cope with all the iPads and iPhones accessing it so it slows your browsing to a crawl (or your boss decides to change the password for the same reason). Maybe you are in a hotel and can't connect all your devices to the room's WiFi at once. Or possibly you want to allow someone onto your WiFi but you don't want to give away the password. It's easy to create a hotspot from your Mac and share your connection with other devices via WiFi, we'll show you how. 

 

You will need to have an Ethernet connection to your Mac.

Step 1

Open System Preferences and select Sharing

Step 2

Select Internet Sharing and choose to Share your connection from Ethernet.

Step 3

Now select that you want to share the connection To computers using: Wi-Fi. You can also choose to share via Ethernet, Bluetooth or even via your iPhone USB.

Step 4

Set a password if you don't want people to jump onto your network without your permission. Select Wi-Fi Options and enter a Network Name and devise a good password of at least 8 characters. WPA2 is the 802.11i standard for encryption.

Step 5

Now tick the On box beside Internet Sharing and agree to Start Internet sharing.

Step 6

You have now created a Wi-Fi hotspot using your Mac. Note that where you would normally see that you had a WiFi signal, now you see an icon indicating that you are sharing your connection.

Step 7

Now on your iOS device that you wish to get on to your WiFi hotspot go to Settings Wi-Fi and select the network you just created. Enter your password and you are good to go.

Step 8

To add a second Mac to your Wi-Fi hotspot click on the Wi-Fi icon at the top of your screen and select the name of the Wi-Fi hotspot you wish to join.

Step 9

Now enter the password for that Wi-Fi network
